No, no, none of us here at SGRA honestly think the world is going to pop out of existence come December 21… but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun anyway! On December 1st we’re kicking off the very first (and maybe last…just kidding!) ”Countdown to Doomsday Month” featuring an entire month – or at least 21 days of it (again, kidding!) filled with asteroid impacts, earth changes, armageddon, and other good end-of-the-world scenarios.
Of course, we’ll be tossing in a lot of fact to the fiction, and discussing reasons why many of these theories simply don’t add up. For example, everyone KNOWS the Aztec Calendar ends on December 21, 2012, and so that MUST mean that it’s the end of days right? Well, not entirely, no. The calendar runs on a cycle, and the ending of the calendar merely means the beginning of a new cycle not the end-all of our planet. However, while most of these scenarios can be easily explained with a little research, others are a bit more undeniable and concerning. We know, as an example, that our planet is going through some major environmental changes… sea levels are rising, natural disasters are increasing, and the severity of storms is higher than ever… so, could THESE scenarios truly spell the end of the world, or at least the end of things as we know them? Ahh… that, in fact, deserves a closer look.
So join us throughout this month online or in-person as we present a series of Coffee Talks, ParaChats, website polls, and so much more! A full listing of December’s events will be posted shortly – including details on our December 21st Doomsday Party (yea, that’s right, we had to have one). And, as always, we look forward to your comments and questions!
